Life-Saving Hero: Medic Joseph Biundo Stops Deadly Carbon Monoxide Tragedy at Dunkin' Donuts

In the early hours of May 30, 2014, Nassau County Ambulance Medical Technician (AMT) Joseph Biundo made an unplanned stop at a Dunkin' Donuts on Glen Cove Road in Carle Place, Long Island. This routine visit turned into a life-saving mission, highlighting the critical importance of vigilance and preparedness.

A Routine Coffee Run Turns Alarming

Around 4 a.m., Biundo entered the Dunkin' Donuts to grab a cup of coffee. Almost immediately, his personal carbon monoxide detector, which he carried on duty, began to beep and flash, indicating the presence of the dangerous, odorless gas. Initially suspecting a malfunction, Biundo stepped outside to reset the device. Upon re-entering, the detector alarmed again, confirming elevated carbon monoxide levels.

Swift Action to Avert Disaster

Recognizing the imminent danger, Biundo quickly evacuated the store's employee and contacted dispatchers, who alerted the Carle Place Fire Department. Firefighters arrived promptly, ventilated the establishment, and identified a faulty oven vent as the source of the carbon monoxide leak.

Proactive Measures Save Lives

Biundo's decision to carry a personal carbon monoxide detector stemmed from a tragic incident earlier that year. In February 2014, a carbon monoxide leak at Legal Sea Foods in Huntington Station resulted in the death of the restaurant manager and the hospitalization of several others. Determined to prevent similar tragedies, Biundo invested $200 of his own money to purchase the detector. Reflecting on its value, he remarked, "It's priceless. It did its job."

Recognition for a Life-Saving Act

In January 2015, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano honored Biundo for his heroic actions. During the ceremony, held at the same Dunkin' Donuts, Mangano commended Biundo's quick thinking and dedication to public safety. The event underscored the importance of individual initiative in safeguarding community well-being.

The Silent Threat of Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas produced by burning fuels such as gas, wood, charcoal, or oil. Exposure to high levels can lead to symptoms like headaches, dizziness, weakness, and even death. The incident at Dunkin' Donuts highlights the critical need for CO detectors in public spaces to ensure early detection and prevention of potential tragedies.

A Call to Action

Biundo's proactive approach serves as a compelling example for both individuals and organizations. His actions not only saved lives but also raised awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide and the importance of preparedness. This incident emphasizes the value of personal responsibility and vigilance in public safety.
